May 2009 Newsletter

April 2009 Meeting Minutes

President, Jack Gregory, called the meeting to order at 7 p.m., April 15, 2009. Jack greeted visitors from Orlando (Central Florida Turners), Virgil and Tillie Morar, Dottie Pugh, our demonstrator.

Offices Report:
President: Jack Gregory has written the required letter for the $800 grant from AAW. The
check should be in soon. Discussion about using this money to buy a projector and camera resulted in a motion to have Jack and Larry Rittenhouse purchase the equipment. Larry has loaned and operated his family equipment for many months now.

Vice President: Paul Pouliot has provided the club with a large roll-up screen. In another fund raiser the signed turning tool that Paul completed at a recent demo is being raffled.
Tickets are being sold April 15th and May 20th's meeting.

Secretary: Vern Burgess stated to turn in for-sale items during or soon after meetings so they can be included in the next newsletter.

Treasurer: Mike Mogillevsky reported $893.00 in the Treasury and the video equipment is expected to be covered by the $800 AAW grant.

Ken Thurman is traveling to Oregon and has offered to ship back boxes of burl and spalted wood to those who contact him. Shipping of wood is $8.00 per container. Ken's telephone number is (321) 255-55-3. Email: kenjool@earthlink.net

Tool man, Jim Donovan said all previously ordered tools were in and about $500 was on the next order to craft supply.

Bruce Swinea, Email: kenjool@earthlink.net is the contact person for Brevard Turners between meeting times, however, Jim Donovan has been attending almost all our meetings. Thank you, Jim.

One member reported that Ace Hardware in Titusville, has agreed to stock C/A glue and activator, etc. Your secretary thanks you.

Wood Auction was again handled by Harvey Driver, and again the Club Treasury benefited about $70.00. Thanks to all who contributed

Chris Costello brought in a pick-up load of maple, some so large, bidders had to go outside to the truck. This is noteworthy because Chris has also made a long term loan of a full size Jet Lathe to the club. Several of us call Chris a friend, but he is not a member of Brevard Woodturners. He is too busy making high quality carvings for Fishing Tournament Trophies.

BREAK

Demonstration:
Dottie Puch- turned out a mini box and lid, smaller than a finger ring.
May's Demonstrator is Ron Browning

Note from the Vice President:
C/A glue has arrived at Titusville Ace Hardware
If anyone is interested in the tools for sale can contact Paul Pouliot at (321) 269-3140 (home) or

PRESIDENT' TURN

Can anyone top Robert Browns’ mailbox? What a neat project! I admire his
creativity and imagination, and his stamina for bringing it in for “show and
tell” Good job Robert!!
We have completed acquisition of our video equipment and things look
pretty good. We have 2 new camcorders and a video projector, a switcher, and
the screen that Paul got from Holy Spirit Church;it is installed and it makes a
big difference in the quality of the projected image. Many thanks to Paul for
getting and installing the screen and Larry Rittenhouse for putting up with my
inane questions on projectors and editing video. Somehow we got everything
done without me getting done in!!
The club has stumbled into an incredible bit of good fortune. I was made aware of a man who had a whole garage full of woodworking tools that he wanted to get rid of, so Paul and I went to see him and came away with all his tools!! The deal was we had to take them all or nothing basis, and
when he told us the price we took the deal. The price? $0000.00!! We could
not believe what we had done, but photos in the newsletter prove it. All
proceeds from the sale of these tools will go to the club. Members will have
first shot and what the members don’t take we will advertise at several
locations around town. I almost forgot, the club got a “like new” Penn
State Mini lathe, so now we have 4.
Good turning and I will see you on the 20th.
Jack Gregory
